Strategic acquisitions grab headlines while channel and geographic expansions create opportunities for others

Here are the lighting acquisitions that were among our most popular stories of 2022. 

 

Current Completes Hubbell Lighting Acquisition

This acquisition was so significant it topped our “notable acquisitions” list in 2021, after it was announced in October 2021, and makes the 2022 list after closing in February 2022.

  • Progress Lighting was not part of the transaction.

  • Purchase price was $350 million.

  • Hubbell Lighting's 2020 revenues were $515 million.

Lumenpulse parent, LMPG, acquires two Canadian architectural manufacturers
  • In July, LMPG announced the acquisition of another Quebec-based architectural lighting company, Pa-Co Lighting, maker of architectural, C&I, vandal-resistant and medical lighting products. Learn more »

  • In November, LMPG acquired Lumca Inc, a privately-owned, pure-play innovative LED lighting solutions provider in the site and area market. Learn more »

 


ams OSRAM sheds More Lighting Assets
  • ams OSRAM announces plans to sell “non-strategic” businesses. Learn more »

  • European rivals that once comprised two of the "Big 3" lamp companies strike a deal. ams OSRAM sold horticultural lighting company, Fluence, to Signify for $272 million. 1-year revenues for Fluence through September 30, 2021 were $141 million. Learn more »

  • ams OSRAM sold Traxon and controls platform e:cue to Hong-Kong based lighting and industrial holding company, Prosperity Group. Learn more »

 


Orion Energy Systems expands beyond lighting

Years ago, Orion’s turnkey model caused the company to win the $100+ million lighting fixture business with The Home Depot from rival Acuity Brands. As The Home Depot business winds down, Orion has bolstered its offerings with acquisitions of a service company and an EV charging company.

  • After a 15-month ownership, Skyview Capital flips Encelium, but still holds on to Digital Lumens

  • Global electrical industry juggernaut, Legrand, has purchased commercial lighting controls brand, Encelium from private equity firm, Skyview Capital.

Delta Light Acquires Multiple U.S. Architectural Lighting Brands

Privately held Belgian lighting company, Delta Light, has ratcheted up its investment in the North American architectural lighting market with the acquisition of Lambent Lighting Group – which is comprised of U.S. architectural lighting brands, LF Illumination, Delray Lighting, Visual Lighting Technologies (VLT) and Softform Lighting.  Learn more »

 


SESCO Lighting acquires WHOCO Lighting & Controls

Okay, when the world’s largest lighting agency acquires a niche, specialty manufacturers’ representative like WHOCO Lighting & Controls, it doesn’t send shockwaves throughout Southeast U.S. lighting markets. It does, however, demonstrate SESCO Lighting’s seemingly continuous commitment to grow organically, through partnerships and through acquisitions.

Consider this: With the recent expansion into North Carolina and South Carolina territories, SESCO Lighting now employs approximately 400 people. We imagine that SESCO Lighting has a much larger employee headcount than most manufacturers whom they represent.

Global $23 billion distribution behemoth, Ferguson, best known for being a leading distributor of plumbing products, acquired two residential lighting companies in 2022.

  • Ferguson, acquired U.S. based RP Lighting + Fans. Once known in lighting circles as Royal Pacific, RP Lighting + Fans sells lighting fixtures, ceiling fans and electrical wiring devices into lighting markets in the U.S. and Canada. Learn more »

Ecosense Notches Two Acquisitions
  • Ecosense parent, Korrus, Acquires Tempo Industries: Product lines align nicely. Lighting agents are remarkably unaligned. Learn more »

Liteline Acquires the Contrast Lighting Brand

In February, inside.lighting  was the first and only lighting news publication to report the news of Canadian downlight maker, Contrast Lighting, shutting down operations and filing for bankruptcy. Six months later, another Canadian lighting maker, Liteline, resuscitated the Contrast Lighting brand by purchasing its assets.
