San Diego's ongoing smart streetlights debate gets pushed out three years

 

CBS 8 San Diego reports that the San Diego City Council has voted to extend the deadline for reviewing the use of surveillance tools, such as street light cameras and license plate readers, by three years. Concerns about privacy and the invasion of personal space have been raised by community members. The San Diego Police Department plans to install 500 new streetlight cameras and automated license plate readers at a cost of $4 million. The cameras will be used to investigate significant crimes after they occur, and private areas will be digitally masked to protect privacy.
