ams OSRAM Spins Off Last-Remaining "Non-Strategic" Lighting Business
Inventronics closes on acqusition of European and Asian Digital Systems
Ten months ago in June 2022, ams OSRAM announced the sale of its European and Asian Digital Systems business to China-based, global LED driver maker, Inventronics. That acquisition has now closed. The ams OSRAM Europe and Asia Digital Systems business mainly develops power supplies with related light modules, software and connectable components. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The spinoff of ams OSRAM’s European digital systems is an independent carveout that is separate from Acuity Brands’ 2021 acquisition of the ams OSRAM Digital Systems business.
The Digital Systems business in Europe and Asia employs around 600 people and operates widely across a large number of European and Asian countries. Inventronics is a publicly traded company headquartered in Hangzhou, China. Inventronics maintains global operations including manufacturing facilities in China, India and Mexico in addition to distribution centers in the US and the Netherlands. Sales offices in major markets around the world service customers in more than 100 countries.
In recent years, ams OSRAM has been transparent about its plans to unload what it calls “non-strategic businesses” that do not align with its core sensor business. In April 2021, Chief Business Development Officer, Mark Hamersma, explained that the company is seeking to spin-off non-strategic businesses to eliminate distractions and free up capital.
The non-strategic businesses:
Digital Systems North America |
Sold to Acuity Brands in 2021 |
Digital Lumens / Encelium |
Sold to Skyview Capital in 2021 |
Fluence |
Sold to Signify in 2022 |
Automotive Lighting Systems |
Sold to Plastic Omnium in 2022 |
Traxon |
Sold to Prosperity Group in 2022 |
Clay Paky |
Sold to ARRI in 2023 |
Digital Systems Eurasia |

Moving forward, ams OSRAM will focus on the high technology semiconductor business and its automotive & specialty lamps business and the announcement represents a milestone in the implementation of ams OSRAM’s strategy to focus on core technology areas in illumination, visualization, and sensing and to divest businesses that are not core to the company’s strategy.
ams OSRAM, once among the lighting industry's "Big Three" lamp companies, continues to manufacture low power, mid-power and high-power LEDs for general illumination and automotive applications.
