50,000 street lights to be deployed over two years

Sunna Design, the parent company to Sol – one of the more recognizable brands in the North American solar lighting market – has announced that it has secured a $45 million contract to provide lighting for a West African country.

The large contract involves supplying and installing 50,000 connected solar street lamps in several thousand non-electrified rural villages in the country of Togo over a 24 month period. Sunna Design will also provide maintenance and related services for 12 years, under a Public-Private Partnership.  Togo has a population of approximately 8 million people and a land area similar to the size of West Virginia.

Sunna Design acquired Sol in March 2020 and the Sol brand now lists Miami as its home. According to the private company’s filings with the French government, Sunna Design’s 2020 net sales (Chiffre d'affaires net) were approximately $3.1 million (2.75 million Euros) with about 90% of sales occurring outside of France. The company’s net sales were reported as approximately $7 million in 2019.

According to the company announcement, Sunna Design’s 50,000 street light project plans for:

  • Solar lighting roll out in priority areas, identified and investigated beforehand via an unprecedented census study of rural infrastructures, ensuring a measurable economic and social impact of each lighting point on people
  • The use of iSSL+ solutions, all-in-one connected street lights with batteries designed to resist high temperatures, produced by Sunna Design at its “Factory of the Future” labeled industrial site, in the Bordeaux region
  • Operation and maintenance services during 12 years, including participation and strengthening of an ecosystem of local operators, promoting local employment
  • Provision of a transparent platform for monitoring implementation and detailed performance of the solar solutions, accessible to public authorities, private and financial partners

The Togolese Agency for Rural Electrification and Renewable Energies (AT2ER), promoter of the project, was reportedly able to validate Sunna Design’s technical capabilities and track record in Sub-Saharan Africa rural areas to finalize this unique project with performance and guarantee commitments over time.
