2 .  Gensler Report Highlights Trends Shaping Design in 2025

Gensler, a leading global architecture firm, has released its 2025 Design Forecast, exploring major trends in sustainability, adaptive reuse, workplace innovation, and more. The firm operates 57 offices worldwide and employs over 6,000 professionals, partnering with clients across the Americas, Europe, Greater China, Asia Pacific, and the Middle East. Some highlights from from the 81-page report include:

  • Building Reuse and Sustainability: Adaptive reuse of aging structures is accelerating, with conversions into housing, healthcare, and senior living spaces. Examples include the Pearl House project in New York City, which transformed 480,000 square feet of office space into residential units. Government incentives, such as tax credits and streamlined permitting, are fueling this trend.
  • Workplace Evolution: High-quality Class A office spaces with wellness and sustainability features are in demand, reflecting a shift toward employee-centric environments. Aging Class B and C properties face declining demand, prompting repositioning or conversion efforts.
  • Consumer and Retail Shifts: Modular retail designs and in-store repair services are gaining traction as retailers adapt to consumer demand for sustainability and flexible consumption models.
  • Sustainability Drives Value: Resilient, energy-efficient buildings are commanding premium prices, with features like LEED or WELL certifications boosting lease rates. Natural lighting and energy-efficient heating and cooling are priorities for both travelers and tenants.
  • Technological Integration: AI, augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR) are revolutionizing design by enabling real-time adjustments and personalized user experiences, with generative AI playing a critical role.

3.   Delta Air Lines partners with BIOS Lighting

On Las Vegas Now on 8 News NOW KLAS-TV, Robert Soler, CEO and founder of BIOS Lighting, highlighted the critical role lighting plays in wellness. Soler explained how the human body relies on signals from natural sunlight to regulate mental health, sleep, and metabolism — elements often disrupted by prolonged time indoors under artificial lighting. BIOS Lighting has developed technology to mimic the 24-hour natural light cycle indoors, supporting improved physical and mental well-being.

Soler also shared details about BIOS Lighting’s partnership with Delta Air Lines to enhance the in-flight experience. By integrating lighting technology that adjusts to passengers’ destination time zones, Delta aims to reduce the effects of jet lag and improve overall comfort during long-haul flights. Soler noted that the system can even cater to individual travel needs, providing tailored solutions for business or leisure travelers.

4.   First-of-Its-Kind Dark Sky Distinction

Melissa Torres of KQRE News this week reported that New Mexico’s Franklin Mountain Energy has become the first oil and gas company in the world to receive a "dark sky" distinction for its efforts to mitigate light pollution in the Permian Basin, which spans western Texas and southeastern New Mexico.

Partnering with Dark Sky International, the company retrofitted two sites and constructed a new facility to comply with light pollution reduction standards. Measures included installing ground-directed fixtures, using warmer-toned lights, and achieving a 60% reduction in lighting energy consumption.

KQRE reports that these efforts led to a 99% decrease in light scattering, significantly restoring visibility of the night skies in areas like Carlsbad Caverns National Park. Once known for its starry skies, the region has faced increasing sky glow due to the proliferation of oil and gas wells. "It's as if a large city has been built out there," said Ruskin Hartley, CEO of Dark Sky International.
