Cooper Lighting & ILC have aligned agents with one notable exception.  Plus, lighting controls 11pm shutoff halts title game.

Here's a roundup of some of the week's happenings curated to help lighting people stay informed.

1.  Cooper Lighting & ILC have aligned agents with one notable exception

In March, Cooper Lighting acquired Minnesota-based Intelligent Lighting Controls (ILC) adding even more capability to Cooper’s lighting controls portfolio.  As inside.lighting noted at the time of the acquisition, many large markets were already aligned with Cooper and ILC sharing the same agent, including SCI Lighting Solutions in San Diego.

While all previously unaligned Cooper Lighting agents have taken on ILC over the past four months, Southern California presents a different scenario. The region has SCI Lighting Solutions representing Cooper Lighting, while Forman & Associates is partnered with ILC.

Interestingly, the alignment did not follow the anticipated pattern in Southern California. Rather than ILC transitioning from Forman to SCI in Los Angeles, the opposite transpired. ILC parted ways with SCI in San Diego and aligned with Forman, a non-Cooper agent, for both Los Angeles and San Diego.

This exceptional case may have something to do with SCI’s partnership with Wattstopper which commenced earlier this year. But unlike other Cooper Lighting agents such as Quality Lighting Systems, Engineered Lighting Sales, Lighting Associates, Mercer-Zimmerman and Waterman Sales who also represent Wattstopper, ILC did not transition to SCI Lighting Solutions.  Wattstopper sales are estimated to be many times larger than ILC sales in the region.

2.  Lighting Controls 11pm Shutoff Halts Championship Game

In an unexpected twist, the recent local American Legion championship match between Sandwich Post 188 and Fall River Post 464 senior baseball teams was abruptly interrupted in Fall River, Massachusetts. The surprise shutoff occurred just as the 14th inning was about to start, due to the automatic shutdown of the ballpark's sports lighting system.

The lights switched off precisely at 11 PM, halting play and leaving the two teams tied at 2-2 in the critical Zone 10 championship game. The interruption occurred while a new Fall River pitcher was warming up to face the heart of Sandwich Post 188's lineup of right-handed sluggers.

4.   Chicken Centric Lighting

A study by the University of Arkansas investigated the impact of variable light intensity programs on the welfare of chickens that are raised for meat production. The research indicated many things including:

  • A 25% reduction in total mortality was observed in birds under variable light intensity compared to those under natural light.

  • Feed conversion ratio was 2.2% lower in birds under variable light intensity compared to those under 20 lux and natural light.

  • Birds exposed to 5 lux light exhibited high stress levels.

  • Variable light intensity encouraged dustbathing and voluntary movement in birds.

  • Chronic social defeat stress was noted in birds under natural light.

  • The study emphasized the beneficial impact of variable light intensity programs on chicken welfare and commercial performance.
