Here's a roundup of some of the week's happenings curated to help lighting people stay informed.
1. Signify Patent Litigation
According to European legal news site, JUVE Patent, Signify has failed on its fourth attempt to get Austrian lighting maker, EGLO, to accept a license to its large LED portfolio. On September 20, Düsseldorf Germany Regional Court dismissed Signify’s suit against EGLO for alleged patent infringement.
EGLO U.S. operations are based in Atlanta, Georgia. Signify filed a July 2022 lawsuit in U.S. court for patent infringement, citing alleged violations similiar to those filed in Germany.

2. Acuity Brands Appoints New Board Member
Acuity Brands has increased the size of its Board of Directors from 11 to 12 members and elected Michael J. Bender as an Independent Director.
Bender most recently served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Eyemart Express, LLC, an optical retailer. His experience also includes operating businesses at scale in the retail, integrated healthcare, real estate, e-commerce and global food and beverage industries. Bender also serves on the Board of Directors of Kohl’s Corporation and is a former Board Director at Ryman Hospitality Properties, Inc.
3. L.A. Times Sounds Off on Light Pollution
“While switching to L.E.D. bulbs helped cut L.A.’s carbon emissions by over 40 percent, it also led to an unintended rise in light pollution.” On Tuesday, the L.A. Times wrote about the impacts of light pollution on animals and humans alike.

5. Nonresidential Construction Employment Increases By 13,000 in September
“Today's employment report was terrific, which in this upside-down, inside-out economic environment means that it was truly terrible,” said ABC Chief Economist Anirban Basu. “Stock, bond and other investors are hunting for signs of slowing economic activity, particularly with respect to the labor market. Those signs did not emerge today.”
