Inside Lighting Responds to Edison Report’s Lawsuit

Edison Report files complaint weeks before Inside Lighting was set to sue them for false advertising and copyright infringement

Randy Reid and Edison Report, a longtime publisher and trade publication, have filed a lawsuit against Al Uszynski, the publisher of Inside Lighting. This comes after many months of back-and-forth between attorneys, and just weeks before we were set to file our own lawsuit against Edison Report.

Notably, the lawsuit does not name Inside Lighting, LLC as a defendant, but instead targets Uszynski solely and personally with business-related claims. It also misidentifies him as “Alfred,” a mistake that appears consistent with other careless or inaccurate assertions in the complaint.

We believe Edison Report’s claims lack merit, and that the facts, including Reid’s own prior admissions, support our position.

A Sharp Contrast of Legal Strategy:

Edison Report is represented by Lawrenceville, Georgia personal injury lawyer Clayton Cain, its third attorney since our legal talks began in 2023. Mr. Cain's website cites 17 practice areas;  the top three listed being car accidents, dog bites, and slip & fall claims.

Uszynski is represented by  Beal Sutherland Berlin & Brown, an Atlanta-based business litigation firm.

Inside Lighting Intends to Sue for Substantial Damages

At the core: After Inside Lighting brought numerous irregularities to their attention, Edison Report publicly acknowledged in 2023 that its media kit contained overstated web traffic numbers “from July 2019 until March 2, 2023” which we believe gave advertisers an inflated picture of their audience size and harmed Inside Lighting. Despite Randy Reid’s written admission covering that period, he now asserts in the lawsuit that the statement that Edison Report “exaggerated statistics for over 3.5 years is demonstrably false and recklessly misleading.”

We also expect to pursue damages for copyright infringement. Edison Report admitted to publishing Inside Lighting content without permission — and acknowledged doing the same with content from numerous other publications. To us, that’s not an isolated mistake, it shows repeated infringement that we intend to hold them financially accountable for.

We’re not expecting perfection from anyone. Mistakes happen, and we’re forgiving when they do. But when significant issues — like repeated copyright infringement or duplicate tracking codes embedded across an entire website — go unnoticed for years and are only addressed after we raise them, it raises serious concerns about ethics and accountability. In cases like this, we believe it’s appropriate to seek a remedy.

Accountability Ahead

We expect these disputes to end with Edison Report being held financially responsible for conduct that we believe broke the basic laws of fair competition and copyright. Inside Lighting will vigorously pursue all legal remedies to ensure accountability.

Lighting industry readers should look past the theatrics and focus on the facts, along with Edison Report’s past admissions and actions, when assessing its credibility.

Inside Lighting remains committed to fair competition and maintaining the integrity that lighting industry professionals deserve from their trade publications.
