The Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) and the Illumination Engineering Society of South Africa (IESSA) have announced a memorandum of understanding (MOU), enabling future collaboration on consensus-based guidelines and publications.

Both parties seek to advance lighting knowledge and to provide a forum for business, training, public engagement, national standards and meaningful engagement within the lighting industry both nationally and internationally.

“With the fast pace of technology transformation in the lighting industry, it is becoming more and more challenging to keep every stakeholder educated and updated in the field of lighting,” said IESSA President Daniel Kasper. “Through our global collaboration with the IES, we aim to positively impact society and the environment while strengthening each other along the way.”

The IES and IESSA have agreed to establish a mutually beneficial relationship between the parties that will encourage coordination among each organisation’s documents, where appropriate and, when mutually beneficial, create joint documents, share in educational opportunities, designate committee representatives and advocate for each other’s organisation. Potential research projects and increased participation in committee activities are anticipated.

IES Director of Education Brienne Musselman added: “Formalising relationships with organisations such as the IESSA will support our efforts to educate, advocate and engage with the global lighting community.”

Established in 1906, the IES is the recognized technical and educational authority on illumination. For over 100 years its objective has been to communicate information on all aspects of good lighting practice to its members, to the lighting community, and to consumers through a variety of programs, publications, and services. The strength of the IES is its diversified membership: engineers, architects, designers, educators, students, contractors, distributors, utility personnel, manufacturers, and scientists, all contributing to the mission of the Society: to improve the lighted environment by bringing together those with lighting knowledge and by translating that knowledge into actions that benefit the public.

The IES is a forum for the exchange of ideas and information and a vehicle for its members’ professional development and recognition. Through its technical committees, with hundreds of qualified members from the lighting and user communities, the IES correlates research, investigations, and discussions to guide lighting experts and laypersons via research and consensus-based lighting recommendations in an effort to improve life through quality of light.

IESSA represents South Africa internationally and thereby acts as the National Committee of the Commission International De L’Eclairage (CIE). The CIE provides a national and international forum for the discussion of all matters relating to the science, technology and art in the fields of light and lighting and for the interchange of information in these fields between countries. Therefore, it acts as a liaison between the world and South Africa to bring us to the forefront of these forever changing trends and technologies.
