Ironic: Quality issues in "Best Lighting Products" LED fixtures sparks recall in U.S. and Canada

Ohio-based Best Lighting Products Inc. is recalling about 710,600 LED high bay light fixtures in the United States due to a fire hazard, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced Thursday. The Canadian government has also issued a recall for an additional 19,100 units sold in Canada.

The recall involves the company's LEDFHB line of high bay light fixtures, which are typically used in commercial settings such as warehouses and facilities with high ceilings. The affected models range from 90 to 425 watts.

According to the recall notice, only products sold through the distributor channel are impacted, omitting any reference to the OEM (Other Equipment Manufacturers) channel, a key segment for Best Lighting Products.  The notice states, "Exclusively through Best Lighting Products distributors from May 2017 through May 2024 for between $60 and $180 depending on size, wattage and accessories."

Quality Concern:

The affected models include LEDFHB90, LEDFHB105, LEDFHB135, LEDFHB178, LEDFHB180, LEDFHB215, LEDFHB265, LEDFHB320, and LEDFHB425. The luminaires were manufactured in China, Vietnam, and Malaysia.

The hazard stems from the plastic pins that secure the LED board. Over time, these pins can degrade, allowing the energized LED board to come loose and potentially contact the lens or other combustible materials, posing a significant fire risk. Best Lighting Products has reported three incidents of fires involving these fixtures, though no injuries have been documented.

Affected End Users:

End users of the fixtures are advised to immediately inspect the high bays for signs of pin degradation, loose LED boards, or lens discoloration. If any issues are found, users should stop using the affected lights and turn off the circuit. The company is offering free inspections and on-site repairs to replace the plastic pins with metal pins.

Best Lighting Products, based in Pataskala, Ohio, is primarily known as a private label supplier to other lighting manufacturers (OEMs), particularly in the exit and emergency lighting category. The company, founded in 1997, serves OEM customers and OEM lighting suppliers with private brands.
