These Lighting Brands Are Driving Progress

Half of the 2022 Progress Report products come from five lighting brands

The mission of the Illuminating Engineering Society’s Progress Committee is to evaluate developments in the art and science of lighting throughout the world and prepare an annual report of achievements for the Society. Each year the committee selects lighting products, research, publications and design tools for inclusion in the annual Progress Report.

What does the committee consider progress? Products that are improved or refined can earn inclusion by:

  • Demonstrating incremental improvement or new feature

  • Becoming the smallest size for that particular product type

  • Delivering the highest lumen output or efficacy in a product category.

Additionally, some products with UV capability or notable material transparency earned inclusion in the 2022 report, too.

In total, 81 submissions were selected for inclusion in this year’s report with 66 being products and the remainder being research, publications and design tools. The committee included six IES research and design tool submissions into the report.

At the recent 2022 IES Annual Conference, Progress Committee member, Mark Lien, presented some historical perspectives. He presented data that tracked Progress Report submissions dating back to 2008. The data showed that during years of rapid LED adoption in 2009 to 2014, it was not unusual for the committee to receive over 260 submissions. Lien described this year’s 125 submissions as “the lowest submittal count we’ve ever had” dating back to 2008 and went on to ask, “Is that a sign of innovation in decline?”

Lien also presented data that tracked large six lighting companies. Lighting companies formerly known as Philips, Osram, General Electric and Hubbell Lighting have been tracked over the years with their current “incarnations” alongside Acuity Brands and Cooper Lighting. Data showed that the “Six Majors” in some years accounted for over half of the submissions. This year, the majors accounted for one-third of all submissions and selected Progress Report inclusions.

Below is the rundown of the brands that had the most products selected for the 2022 Progress Report. The report will be published in the November 2022 issue of LD+A magazine and will be available on the IES website.
