A Repeat Bridge Lighting Controversy is Averted

Resolution is helping the LGBTQ+ community feel seen and heard

JACKSONVILLE, FL – In June 2021, a dynamic display of rainbow-colored lights on a high-profile Jacksonville, Florida bridge were turned on to mark Pride Month, then turned off by DOT orders, then turned back on after backlash.

With Pride Month 2022 underway, there was concern that a similar Acosta Bridge controversy was going to repeat itself, but it appears that local and state stakeholders collaborated in a way that is bringing recognition to Pride Month by helping "the LGBTQ+ community feel seen and heard." The rainbow lights are being displayed for five days this week.

NBC Jacksonville First Coast News reporter, Leah Shields, shares more of the details above.
