LED and Lighting Controls Rebate Programs: Mid-Year 2024 Update by UtilityGenius

We’re excited to bring you a mid-year update on rebate trends, building on our annual Rebate Trends analysis and webinar. This report covers changes from mid-March 2024 to July 31, 2024, and reveals that rebates are experiencing a notable surge.

The most significant increases have been seen in rebates for fixtures with decreases in lamps. Both downstream/prescriptive and midstream/instant rebate programs have experienced rises, especially for High Bays, Troffers, and LED tubes.

However, some decreases occurred, for example in Orange & Rockland (NY) due to quicker-than-anticipated budget exhaustion. Overall, lighting rebate increases reached up to 85%, with the biggest decreases hitting -60%. The next round of program updates is expected in October, aligning with the end of the U.S. Federal fiscal year.

In addition, lighting controls, particularly Networked Lighting Controls (NLCs), are gaining increased attention from utility rebate programs.

Between mid-March 2024 and July 31, 2024, rebates for NLCs have been on the rise. These systems often require a Design Lights Consortium (DLC) listing and may need to meet certain criteria to qualify for incentives.

Noteworthy increases in NLC rebates have been seen from utilities such as Mass Save, NYSEG, Rhode Island Energy, EfficiencyWorks (CO), Pacific Power (WA), BGE/Pepco/Delmarva Power (MD), Atlantic City Electric (NJ), Orange & Rockland (NY), SWEPCO (TX), and Rocky Mountain Power (WY).

While Basic controls are starting to appear in midstream/instant rebate programs, NLCs have yet to make significant strides in these areas due to variability in energy savings based on factors like square footage and building characteristics.
