C&O Sales to acquire NRG, expanding Genlyte footprint into Iowa market

C&O Sales, based in the Kansas City metro area, has entered into an agreement to purchase the assets of NRG Sales Lighting & Controls, a leading lighting agency based in Iowa with offices in Des Moines and Cedar Rapids. Both agents represent the Signify Genlyte brands along with many other independent manufacturers. The agency will phase out NRG name in Iowa and will go to market as “C&O Sales” in Iowa.

Prior to the acquisition, C&O had been representing numerous electrical lines throughout Iowa including Signify’s Advance (drivers and ballasts) as well as Century Wire & Cable.

Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Iowa

In addition to representing Signify Genlyte in Iowa, NRG represents over 50 independent lighting brands in the Nebraska market. Those brands are expected to help bolster C&O’s existing presence in the Cornhusker state. There don't appear to be any major lines that create obvious competitive conflicts, so the recently bolstered lineup of manufacturers seems to have a good chance of not only joining the C&O family, but sticking around for the long term, too.

Electrical industry agents have long considered the four-state Great Plains region to be one territory, and in recent years a couple of prominent lighting agents have expanded their boundaries within that territory. C&O Sales is the latest to shore up its presence throughout the region which doesn't (yet) include St. Louis and Jefferson City in Eastern and Central Missouri. Meglio and Associates is the Signify Genlyte agent for that territory – which may likely require occasional business collaboration between the two neighboring Missouri lighting agencies – but the other side of that Missouri coin is that Meglio also represents over 60 independent lighting brands in Kansas City, Missouri and throughout Kansas – thus also competing with C&O sales in those markets.

Agency Leadership

According to the agencies, both NRG principals, Ron Reidburn and Jeff Kramer, along with the entire NRG Sales staff will become part of the C&O Sales team.

“We are very excited to make this announcement. Combining our sales team across the 4-state region will make it possible to better serve our customers and channel partners. We have had a strong electrical offering in the State of Iowa for many years, but this acquisition allows us to add more lines and sales staff to our offering, strengthening our current lighting and electrical position.”

Terry King, President, C&O Sales

The transaction is expected to close on February 28. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
