Business of Light aims to elevate business knowledge in the lighting design profession

A new non-profit organization called the Business of Light has been launched in honor of long-time lighting design icons Barbara Horton and Stephen Lees. Barbara and Stephen spent most of their lighting careers focusing on the business of design and mentoring next generation leaders. They have announced a $25,000 seed money contribution to the organization. The Business of Light has brought a prominent team of lighting industry leaders together to empower individuals through education and mentorship to grow and sustain lighting businesses.

“Elevating business knowledge by introducing a wide range of professional consultants skilled in the many aspects of business is an essential part of the tool kit necessary to inspire future leadership to achieve successful and satisfying careers,” says Barbara Horton.

The non-profit and its mission was introduced at LightFair 2021 in New York City and the group is gearing up for a formal program launch at IALD Enlighten Americas 2022.

The Board of Directors is made up of leaders representing multiple lighting design firms and areas of lighting expertise: David Ghatan, CLD, FIALD (CM Kling Lighting Design), Anna Sbokou, IALD (ASlight), Maggie Giusto (Axis Lighting), Tom Warton (Vode Lighting), Katherine Stekr, CLD, IALD (HLB Lighting Design), Carrie Hawley, IALD, MIES, LEED AP (HLB Lighting Design), Stephen Lees, FIALD (HLB Lighting Design), and Barbara Horton, CLD, FIALD (HLB Lighting Design).
