Light Poles Keep Falling in Chicago

A study conducted 5 years ago found a "concerning" amount of rust on city poles.

CHICAGO, IL – In March 2021, a rusted street light pole fell in the busy Streeterville section of Chicago. Last month, another pole fell nearby. And across the street from the February incident, yet another street pole just dropped this week.

A Chicago Department of Transportation survey conducted five years ago determined that of the 330,000 light poles in the city, more than 33,000 poles, or 10 percent, were graded as having some sort of serious issue.

In her report above, CBS 2 Investigator Megan Hickey explains that over 2,000 of city poles have been replaced, but much more work still needs to be done.
