Enlighted Halts Lighting Controls Business
Company immediately ceases new orders, while signaling an orderly transition for existing customers
Enlighted, the Silicon Valley-based provider of IoT-enabled lighting controls and smart building technology, has announced plans to wind down its core lighting business. The company, owned by Siemens since 2018, shared the news directly with its network of lighting agents and OEM partners last week.
According to a memo sent to partners, Enlighted cited an inability to achieve profitable growth despite significant investment efforts. Effective immediately, the company has ceased accepting new orders for its hardware, software, and services tied to lighting control projects.
A company spokesperson explained that Siemens will be ramping down the Enlighted business by the end of this fiscal year, which is September 30. The ramp down includes Enlighted's core lighting and value-added IoT offerings that are deeply connected to the lighting business. Siemens will retain Enlighted Connect, which is separate from the lighting business and will remain part of Siemens Smart Infrastructure and continue to be supported moving forward.
A Measured Shutdown, Not a Chaotic One
Initial reaction from industry stakeholders appears to be one of disappointment but not alarm.
Lighting agents and OEMs impacted by the decision have described the communication from Enlighted as clear and professional. While any shutdown of a technology company carries potential risks — particularly for cloud-connected systems — the fact that Siemens will manage ongoing system support for Enlighted Connect has provided a degree of reassurance.
One common industry concern when an IoT company exits the market is whether devices or software tied to the company's cloud infrastructure could become inoperable, leaving customers stranded. In this case, Enlighted has indicated that Connect systems will transition to Siemens' infrastructure, reducing the likelihood of disruption for users of this specific platform.
What’s Next for Projects, Systems and Support?
For existing projects already specified with Enlighted products, the company is working directly with partners to evaluate next steps. According to its memo, Enlighted’s team will be reaching out to discuss final orders, contract closures, and remaining obligations.
Warranty commitments, Enlighted stated, will be honored “to the best of our ability.” While it remains to be seen how every outstanding order or commission dollar will be resolved, early sentiment among affected partners suggests that Enlighted and Siemens are taking a deliberate approach to those conversations.
Siemens Refocuses
Now, with Enlighted’s core lighting controls business set to wind down, the company joins a list of firms that have encountered the economic and operational realities of delivering advanced technology in a highly competitive market.
For partners and customers, the focus in the coming weeks will be on managing existing projects and ensuring that systems already in place continue to operate reliably.
For Siemens, the move reflects a strategic shift toward software-driven smart building solutions, with lighting controls now playing a smaller, more integrated role within that broader ecosystem.
