1. Northwest U.S. Lighting Agents Combine Operations

Two Oregon lighting agents, Malcar Northwest Inc. and Northern Illumination Company LLC, recently announced that they are combining operations and will serve the marketplace as a single entity. The combined companies will utilize the Northern Illumination Company LLC (NIC) name, location, and systems. Nearly all of the brands represented by Malcar Northwest Inc. will transition to NIC over the next few weeks.

2.  Lighting Controls Company Secures $13.4 Million in Funding

According to a new regulatory filing, Deako Lighting, a Seattle-based maker of smart lighting controls, raised $13.4 million to help fund growth of the seven-year-old business.

Deako Lighting focuses on various vertical markets including multifamily, senior/assisted living facilities, hotels, student housing and single family homes, among other applications.

3. IRS Evaluating Building Efficiency Incentives

The Internal Revenue Service recently issued six notices asking for comments on different aspects of extensions and enhancements of energy tax benefits in the Inflation Reduction Act.  The IRS anticipates that constructive comments from interested parties will aid the agency in drafting the guidance items most reflective of the needs of taxpayers entitled to claim energy credits.

Among the notices is Notice 2022-48 which requests comments on incentive provisions for improving the energy efficiency of residential and commercial buildings with respect to the interior lighting systems, heating, cooling, ventilation, and hot water systems. Written comments should be submitted by Friday, November 4, 2022.

4.  ams OSRAM Executive to Depart in May 2023

ams OSRAM AG said that its Chief Financial Officer, Ingo Bank, won't extend his contract beyond May 2023.

The electronics manufacturer said Mr. Bank, who joined the predecessor company ams AG as CFO of Osram Licht in May 2020, will leave for personal reasons, and that it will start to prepare a succession.

5.  Progress Toward Carbon Neutral Buildings

A recent report published by the American Institute of Architects explores the progress firms made in 2021 toward the goal of carbon neutral buildings by 2030. 

  • 276 whole building projects were reported as net-zero in 2021, representing both 2.1 percent of projects and gross square footage.

  • 67,399,844 gross square feet were reported as net-zero in total in 2021.
