Signify is making some major changes in the New York Metro Area – we break it down for you.

Two newly-appointed agents will begin representing Signify lighting brands in the Greater New York City area including Northern New Jersey: Specified Lighting Sales and Synergy Electrical Sales. Effective date is August 8.

Lighting Fixtures & Controls - SLS:

  • For many years, Empire Lighting, a division of Thea Enterprises, has been Signify’s Genlyte Solutions agent in the New York Metro Area. Brands include Lightolier, Day Brite and Ledalite.
  • The Genlyte Solutions brands will soon shift from Empire Lighting to Specification Lighting Sales (SLS)

The Supply Channel – Synergy Electrical Sales

  • Thea Enterprises has long represented Philips/Signify on the supply channel for Philips lamps and Advance drivers/ballasts.
  • Synergy Electrical Sales is headquartered in metropolitan Philadelphia and represents many lighting and controls lines in that market including Philips lamps and Advance drivers/ballasts.
  • Synergy also represents Lutron Commercial Shades in the New York Metro Area and joined forces with a long-time NYC Lighting agent, Pyramid Lighting, at the beginning of 2021.

What about Color Kinetics?

  • CK stays with its existing agent, Electric Lighting Agencies (ELA), on both sides of the Hudson River.

Municipal & DOT market:

  • Dave Murphy & Associates will continue to represent Hadco, Lumec and Gardco for municipal & DOT channels.

Over the last year, SLS has morphed into a different agency:

There are 20+ lighting agents that cover the New York City market. Line cards are shorter there than in other large cities, and conglomerate/major lighting manufacturers don’t wield as much leverage in the NYC market as they might in other large markets.

A year ago, SLS would have been described as a well-respected, specification focused lighting agent that had a good team of people and a solid line card. Here is what their line card looked like in June 2020.

The agency will soon take on the responsibility of representing one of the major lighting manufacturers in North America’s largest lighting market. In addition to the big Signify move, here’s what they’ve recently been doing to bolster their agency:

North Jersey:
In Summer of 2020 SLS announced its entry into the North Jersey territory, and already had some solid lines in their stable.

Filling out the Legrand Scorecard:
SLS has long been the Focal Point agent in the NYC market. Over time, they’ve been able to add Finelite, Wattstopper, Kenall and OCL to the list. Pinnacle is the only Legrand lighting brand that is not with SLS.
