Product Manager Job Description
The Product Manager will lead the product development process from initial concept through to client business award. This role focuses on managing customer requirements, developing winning product solutions, and driving internal alignment with engineering, sourcing, and quality teams. Once the client formally awards the business, responsibility for product execution transitions to the operations and program management teams.
Key Responsibilities:
Customer & Market Engagement
- Collaborate with sales and customers to fully understand and translate business needs into technical product requirements.
- Conduct competitive analysis and gather market insights to position products for customer success.
Product Development & Proposal Management
- Develop detailed product concepts, specifications, and cost targets aligned with customer RFPs and business goals.
- Manage timelines and cross-functional inputs (engineering, sourcing, quality) to deliver comprehensive product proposals.
- Lead internal reviews and presentations to ensure solution feasibility, cost competitiveness, and quality compliance.
Cross-Functional Coordination
- Act as the central point of contact between customers, engineering, sourcing, and quality during product development phases.
- Facilitate communication and alignment to support on-time delivery of product proposals.
Transition to Production
- Upon client business award, ensure smooth handoff of product documentation, specifications, and knowledge to program management and operations.
- Support initial production kick-off as needed but do not lead ongoing manufacturing or post-launch activities.
Qualifications:
- 4–8 years product management or development experience in lighting or electrical manufacturing environments.
- Strong knowledge of lighting and smart home products.
- Proven ability to manage complex product proposals and cross-functional teams to meet tight deadlines.
- Excellent communication skills for client and internal stakeholder interaction.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and maintain clear documentation.
- Bachelor’s degree Business, or a related discipline.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office suite, emphasis on excel
Preferred:
- Experience or strong knowledge of residential lighting products, including familiarity with applicable codes, consumer preferences, and product styles.
- Understanding of lighting controls integration, including dimming, motion sensing, and smart home platforms (e.g., Bluetooth Mesh, Zigbee, Matter).
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering,
- Proficiency with PLM, ERP, or cost modeling tools, such as Arena, Agile, NetSuite, or Excel-based cost BOMs.
- CAD or design file literacy, enabling better collaboration with engineering or ID teams reviewing drawings or specs
Working Conditions
Hours: Full Time - Salaried
Working in an office environment remaining in a stationary position for 50% or more of the time. Occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc. Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer. The ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. The ability to observe details at close range (within a few feet of the observer) Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations. Essential physical requirements, such as standing, stooping, or typing. Physical effort/lifting, such as sedentary - up to 10 pounds; light - up to 20 pounds; medium - up to 50 pounds; heavy - over 50 pounds. On occasion required to be on evening calls as a regular part of the job.
