Job Title: Controls & Applications Lead / Inside Sales

ALW is seeking a synergistic, highly-motivated lighting and controls expert to join our Inside Sales team in Oakland, California. This is a fully remote work-from-home role. Reporting to Technical Sales Manager, the Controls & Applications Lead / Inside Sales, will focus on managing high-profile embedded controls projects, and provide support to Sales, Marketing, and Engineering on controls and product related functions. This is an ever-changing role with room for growth within the company.

Job Duties
  • Project Management
    • Create and manage quotations for projects considered ‘Advanced’, based on size and/or technical complexity.

    • Act as primary pre-sales point of contact to lighting agents (technical questions and solutions guidance)

    • Prioritize and manage multiple requests for quotation (RFQs) simultaneously.

    • Configure, price, and quote an itemized bill of materials (BOMs) using ALW’s Salesforce platform.

    • Interpret project intent by gathering and analyzing multiple sources of information:

      • Take-offs, reflective ceiling plans (RCPs), CAD drawings, annotated/redlined drawings.

      • Use Bluebeam as key tool to measure, label & annotate RCPs

      • Crossovers of equivalent competitor fixture codes and/or spec sheets.

    • Formulate product options that meet project specifications, customer requirements, budget parameters and project construction timelines.

    • Negotiate pricing to meet budgetary requirements while maintaining maximum profitability.

    • Coordinate requests for technical drawings with ALW’s drafting engineers.


  • Controls Solutions
    • Lead expert on 3rd party embedded controls (load controls, photocell/occ sensors, emergency relays, etc.)

      • Example brands include Acuity nLight, Lutron Athena & Vive, Cooper Wavelinx, Enlighted, NX Controls

    • Provide guidance to lighting agents on controls layout, circuit design, and product code specification.

    • Use Bluebeam to communicate circuit layout, emergency sections, product type labels.

    • Train Sales Teams on new controls technologies, 3rd party product line updates, and tips for effective controls related project management.

    • Register projects with 3rd party controls manufacturers. Align agent and 3rd party controls on project details, integration challenges, and solutions for integration.

  • Customs/Modifications
    • Support Inside Sales teams to offer modified and custom product solutions.

    • Solid Design for Manufacturing (DFM) skills to design/quote custom products for high profile projects.

    • Use Arena Product Lifetime Management (PLM) software and ALW’s internal inventory software to design, build, and price custom BOMs for projects.

    • Build SOPs and support tools for Inside Sales to assist in quoting modified and custom opportunities.

  • Knowledge of:
    • Mechanical and electromechanical design and manufacturing techniques.

    • Standard drawing practices for lighting plans, building system diagrams, mechanical drawings, etc.

    • LEDs and power supplies, 3rd party controls, basic lighting terminology, photometry and related applications.

    • Quality control practices and procedures.

    • Knowledge of PLM software including Autodesk PLM and Arena.

    • Bluebeam Revu, Arena PLM, Revit, Adobe In-Design, Adobe Illustrator, Microsoft Suite.

    • Business and technical writing and standard format for reports and correspondence.


  • Ability to:
    • Plan and execute a variety of multiple tasks and projects in an effective and timely manner; organize your own work; set priorities and meet critical time deadlines and schedules.

    • Lead projects and process efforts.

    • Travel domestically and internationally (3+ times per year).

    • Listen and communicate well (verbal and written).

    • Work hands-on with electronic systems.

    • Provide a high level of service by effectively working with customers, vendors and staff.

    • Work well independently and with cross-functional teams and departments.

    • Problem solve, make solid recommendations and have a high attention to detail and accuracy.

    • Be creative, enthusiastic, adaptable and able to accept feedback.


  • Education and Experience:
    • BS in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Controls Design, Lighting Design, or 5+ years experience in related fields.

    • 5+ years of experience working in the lighting industry or relevant experience.


  • Physical Demands / Environmental Hazards 
    • Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer, vision to inspect finished goods, read printed materials and a computer screen; strength to lift and carry materials weighing up to 25 pounds; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone.

    • The work may require exposure to dust, noise and, some potentially hazardous materials.
