RAB Lighting alleges that three Cree Lighting product families are infringing upon its patents

On Monday, November 23, RAB Lighting filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Ideal Industries Lighting, the parent company to the Cree Lighting and E-conolight brands.  In the complaint, RAB cites three specific patents and accuses Cree of infringing upon them in multiple product families:

  • Cree Lighting C-LITE C-AR-A-SL4-9L LED Area Light
  • Cree Lighting E-FFL LED Flood Light
  • C-LITE and E-GL5M LED Bullet Flood Light (marketed under the E-conolight brand)

The suit was filed in United States District Court for the District of Delaware.

In July, Cree Lighting sued RAB alleging 5 counts of patent infringement relating to other outdoor luminaires.  That case is still open but the two parties have agreed to pause the litigation while the International Trade Commission (ITC) reviews the patents cited in the case.

Please remember:

As you likely would do with any similar situation, do not to jump to conclusions on any legal conflict until you know all the facts.  Just because a party is accused of wrongdoing does not mean the party committed wrongdoing.

Also:

  • IP litigation can sometimes be prolonged and contentious, ending in a jury trial.
  • IP litigation can often be a leverage play by the plaintiff to drive towards some sort of negotiated arrangement or settlement between the two parties that never goes to trial -- settled in mere months.
