More Patent Lawsuits Emerge

2020 09 more patent lawsuits emerge.jpg

1.  Heavy Duty Lighting vs. Acuity Brands

Heavy Duty Lighting has filed a lawsuit against Acuity Brands alleging 10 counts of patent infringement.  The suit was filed in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, Atlanta Division.

The 142-page complaint details each of the patents that Heavy Duty Lighting claims to own and cites each of the allegedly infringing designs by Acuity Brands that, according to the Plaintiff, violates their intellectual property.

Many of the claims seem similar to a lawsuit that the Plaintiff filed against Kichler.  Is this a case of Heavy Duty Lighting having some valuable intellectual property that will be enforced with many other lighting manufacturers?  Is this a case of Heavy Duty Lighting throwing 10 claims against the wall with multiple manufacturers to see if one of them sticks?  Or is there some other underlying explanation?

Each count details a different patent and the Acuity Brands design aspect that to which the Plaintiff has objection. Detailed complaints include:

  1. The Lithonia OLF 3-Head Floodlight comprises a plurality of LED chips positioned around a center of a primary surface of the substrate.
  2. The Lithonia OLF 3-Head Floodlight comprises a light reflective resin frame (e.g. opaque) which is formed on the surface of the substrate and provided annularly so as to surround a mounting area in which the plurality of LED chips are provided.
  3. The Lithonia OLF 3-Head Floodlight comprises an anode-side electrode land and a cathode-side electrode land which are electrodes to be connected to an external voltage supply.
