Hubbell is Creating a Controls Epicenter in Austin

Future Home of Hubbell Control Solutions Design Center of Excellence and Lighting Solutions Center Training Facility

Greenville, SC  – Hubbell Lighting, one of the largest lighting manufacturers in North America, has signed a 15,000-square-foot lease at Summit II at La Frontera to create the future home of its lighting controls Design Center of Excellence and training facility.

Summit II at La Frontera, located in Round Rock just north of Austin, is a Class A office building owned and managed by Mark IV Capital. The two-story building features food truck services for tenants, an on-site gym and shower facility, anticipated LEED certification and a 10,000 square foot private garden with collaboration and outdoor dining areas. Austin, Texas-based The Burt Group will serve as the general contractor and Sixth River has been retained for architectural services.

The facility will be home to Hubbell Control Solutions Design Center of Excellence and Hubbell Lighting’s third Lighting Solutions Center training facility. The widespread conversion to LED lighting technology and growth in sensory networks has ushered in a new era of Connected Lighting Systems, one of the fastest growing technology markets today. This has brought about a paradigm shift in how the marketplace views lighting, as light fixtures are no longer “merely” a light fixture. They are now a building block of the Internet of Things (IoT) to come that deliver optimized energy efficiency, enhanced occupancy comfort and reduced operating costs.

“We’re building a progressive and dynamic lighting controls and intelligent network systems team here in Austin, one of the world’s leading technology hubs,” said Jason Sherrill, vice president of brand management for Hubbell Control Solutions. “Hubbell Control Solutions is the technology innovator within a four-billion-dollar electrical company that has the resources and passion to sprint ahead in this rapidly shifting industry. The Design Center of Excellence is where we are going to develop the next-generation of IoT applications and connected lighting to support the advancement of smart buildings and smart cities.”

Hubbell Control Solutions has featured a footprint in the Austin market since 2002 and it will be relocating from its 3,500 square foot space at Centre Creek Plaza. This new facility will house seven functional teams comprised of product owners, engineers, software and mobile app developers, UX designers and other development associates. It will also feature a fully operational testing lab where the company will test the integration of solutions with third-party partners and perform simulations and tests to ensure customer quality, performance and reliability expectations are met.

“We were thrilled to help Hubbell Lighting identify this new premiere space for their lighting controls Design Center of Excellence and training facility,” said Allen Lindow, CCIM, First Vice President at CBRE. “The Round Rock submarket has a strong and rapidly growing office market. This, combined with the easily accessed local amenities, made Summit II at La Frontera the perfect fit for Hubbell Lighting’s exciting new venture.”

The brand anticipates growing from 17 full-time employees in Austin to 50. It will continue recruiting and interviewing prospective employees to work in this facility over the course of the next twelve months. These new team members will be involved in the complete product development life cycle, seeing their work evolve from ideas to finished products and solutions in a hybrid agile environment using the latest technologies and tools.
