A Peek Behind the Curtain of the Auction for Lighting Trade Show Assets

Last week’s announcement of the new LightSPEC West trade show and conference has been met with a very positive response by our West Coast lighting friends.  The new show will fill the void left by the recently-bankrupt company that was behind the popular LightShow West and the LED Specifier Summit events.

We’ve learned that there was a bit of a bidding war for the assets of LightShow West and LED Specifier Summit.  Here are some of the details:

THE PARTIES:

Exponation
Company that owned LightShow West & LED Specifier Summit.  Filed for bankruptcy in late 2020.  The company’s assets were being auctioned in compliance with bankruptcy proceedings.

Endeavor Business Media
The company behind LEDs Magazine and Strategies in Light that is launching the new LightSPEC West event in 2022.

Questex
A large trade show and event company that owns various events that serve a wide array of industries.

THE TAKEAWAYS:

1. The Biggest Prize from the Exponation Auction
The largest Exponation event was the Digital Signage Expo.  Questex purchased the assets of that show for $450,000 in March.

2. The Bidders for the Lighting Event Assets
Questex and Endeavor were the only two companies bidding on the assets of LightShow West and LED Specifier Summit.

3. The Winning Bid
Endeavor won the auction with a high bid of $40,000.  Questex’s highest bid was $35,000.

4. What They Actually Bought
A complete list of the assets is below.  We believe the most valuable assets were the attendee and exhibitor lists.  It really helps Endeavor to have them, but it is super important to keep them away from another event company who would have a much lower barrier of entry to the lighting event world if they were to possess the info.

5. Why Botox Matters
In addition to the Digital Signage Expo, Questex owns the International Esthetics, Cosmetics & Spa Conference.  We are closely monitoring that show because it could be one of the first events to be hosted this summer at the Javits Convention Center and could serve as a telling sign for the status of Lightfair.

5.5  Keeping It in the Lighting Family
With all respect to Questex, we are pleased to see the LightShow West assets go to Endeavor – as they are a company that is already well-entrenched into the inner workings of the lighting industry and has a great reputation for providing excellent media coverage and well-run, content-rich events.
