NEMA Survey Signals Mixed Mood Across Manufacturers

Respondents reported steadier demand but slower customer decision-making
Each month, the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) publishes the Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI), a monthly survey designed to gauge business sentiment among North American electrical equipment manufacturers, including many lighting companies. The index offers a quick read on how industry participants view conditions right now and where they expect things to stand six months out.
May brought a modest pullback in current conditions. The Current Conditions component slipped to 47.7, down 2.3 points from April's 50.0, moving back below the expansionary threshold after only one month above it. Half of all respondents described conditions as unchanged, while those reporting improvement fell to 23 percent. Respondents noted steady demand in certain end markets, but also cited rising costs and slower customer decision-making as ongoing headwinds.
Forward-looking sentiment told a different story. The Future Conditions component edged up to 72.7 from 70.5 in April, with 59 percent of respondents continuing to expect better conditions over the next six months. The share anticipating worse conditions actually fell, from 18 percent to 14 percent. Respondents flagged trade policy, inflation, and geopolitical developments as downside risks, but the overall tone remained constructive.
Methodology: The EBCI is based on monthly surveys of senior managers at NEMA member companies, designed to gauge the business environment of the electroindustry across North America. Readings above 50 indicate expansionary conditions for the sector.
